PhD candidate position in the field of Mechatronics and robotics (Development and research of sensor fusion-based controlled microrobot).

Open application for a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering (009T)

The doctoral candidate position is available in the faculty of Mechanics department of Mechatronics, robotics and digital manufacturing. Applicants interested in other research topics related to sensors, and mechatronic system control, are also welcome to apply.

Research topic description
For real manipulation of the micrometric size objects not enough to use only visual position recognition, optical view develops problems of real scale and physical coordinates. Therefore, control of microrobots remains a problem and its solution is often based on individual robot configurations.

Object of research
Microrobot with AI-based position control system.

Aim of the research
To develop a methodology, build a prototype of such a microrobot, simulate an actual robot model and experimentally test AI-based robot control system with a multiply sensor signal-fusion procedure. Such a system will develop real coordinates of the object, using different physical phaenomena-based sensors. Such a system should compensate for clearances in the real systems and developed prototypes; therefore, it will be tested experimentally.

Tasks for research:
1. Develop methodology of microscopic object position definition.
2. Develop a dynamic model of the microrobot, simulate its behaviour and perform experimental research.
3. Develop and test methodology for such microrobot control and define its accuracy limits.
4. Experimentally test results of theoretical analysis and simulation and draw conclusions.

The selected candidate will work on the PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. dr. Vytautas Bučinskas. The successful applicant will have to attend scientific conferences, meetings and internships in other universities.

Requirements
• Required background: engineering education in mechanics or electronics.
• Expected skills and knowledge: engineering laboratory practice.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Programme structure

The PhD programme consists of:
· Independent research under supervision;
· Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits);
· Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions;
· Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is related to the PhD topic when possible;
· The completion of a PhD thesis.
