Research topic description
As the climate warms and water pollution increases, macroalgae have become an actual problem, as ecosystems are unable to break them down in natural ways. Research conducted by scientists has shown that macroalgae can be used for biogas production. The work envisages methanogenesis studies when macroalgae are mixed with different additives (nanoparticles). It can be assumed that such a substrate would improve the methanogenesis process in the bioreactor and increase the yield of biogas and methane. Multi-stage bioreactors developed by VilniusTech will be used for the research. During the research, it is planned to obtain the dependences of the quantitative and qualitative composition of biogas on the composition of the substrate, to perform physicochemical tests of the substrate, and to determine the microbiota in the anaerobically digested substrate. The research aims to propose a technological solution for the production of biogas by anaerobically digesting macroalgae with additives.

The selected candidate will work on the PhD thesis under the supervision of assoc. prof. dr. Alvydas Zagorskis. The successful applicant will have to attend scientific conferences, meetings and internships at other universities.

• Required background: Candidates with a master’s degree (or equivalent) in environmental engineering, geology, environmental science or a related field.
• Expected skills and knowledge: technological (to be a user of IT applications and modelling programs).

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Programme structure

The PhD programme consists of:
· Independent research under supervision;
· Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits);
· Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions;
· Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is related to the PhD topic when possible;
· The completion of a PhD thesis.
