PhD candidate position in the Antecedents and performance of international new ventures

Open application for a doctoral candidate in Management
The doctoral candidate position is available in the Business Management faculty Business technologies and entrepreneurship department. Applicants interested in other research topics related to the competitiveness of sector research are also welcome to apply.

Research topic description
The contribution of the logistics sector is evident in the economies of the Member States of the European Union. The sector employs about 11 million people. Employees, who make up more than 5% of the total working population, and the logistics sector’s contribution to GDP is almost 5%. By 2050, the logistics sector is expected to grow by more than 50%, and the application of digital technologies will be even more relevant and vital for the success and survival of companies in the logistics sector (EU Commissioner for Management of the Logistics Sector, 2017). It will have an impact on economic growth.
The revenue of a business that takes advantage of the sharing economy model is growing faster than that of a company that uses the traditional model to generate revenue. The difference in revenue generated by businesses using the sharing economy model (OECD, 2022) is growing by at least 10-15% (Spendmenot, 2022) and is projected to continue to grow until 2025, while in the logistics sector, this growth will also be evident. This income gap is due to businesses’ and consumers’ orientation towards using the benefits of the sharing economy model (Eurostat, 2022). The sharing model is promoted by businesses to customers through digital technologies (OECD, 2022).
The role and influence of information technology in firms’ business and value creation remain controversial—the question of how technology can drive businesses striving for competitiveness. The authors investigate the role of information technology in sharing economy organizations. These organizations are digital platforms that combine physical and digital service elements. On the topic of digital technologies, publications were published by the authors: Ding et al. (2021), Chung (2021), Akkaya et al. (2019), and Davidavičienė et al. (2019). Their work includes the results of the application of different technologies in the logistics sector focused on:
- resource sharing (Wang et al. 2022, Silva et al. 2019),
- order sharing (Moncef et al. 2021, Handoko et al. 2016), and
- information sharing (Liu et al. 2021, Fotiadou et al. 2020).
The changing economic environment (identified in the Communication of the European Commission (2016) on the service sectors “A European programme for the sharing economy”) and changes in the processes of business organization lead to changes in the provision of logistics services to reduce the consumption of material resources, energy and increase the capacity of the sector as a result of the application of technology, i.e. to increase the competitiveness of the logistics sector. The study will build on Schumpeter’s evolutionary approach to economic growth and the methodology for assessing the competitiveness of sectors proposed by the European Commission (2021).
PhD thesis aims to examine the impact of digital technologies on the competitiveness of the logistics sector in the context of the sharing economy.
Such tasks are planned to reach the aim of PhD thesis:
1. Summary of the latest scientific material related to the application of digital technologies to increase the competitiveness of the logistics sector in the context of the sharing economy;

3. Conducting empirical studies to assess the competitiveness of the logistics sector in the context of the sharing economy and summarising the results obtained;
4. Assessment of the competitiveness of the logistics sector through the analysis of scenarios for the application of technology in the context of the sharing economy.
