Overview
Technological innovations in maritime transport are among the most modern in the global transport system, and this study programme is designed to train Officer in Charge of an Engine Watch (OICEW) who will ensure the successful operation and maintenance of modern ship engines and other energy equipment of various power.
Programme structure
Professional Bachelor of Engineering Sciences and Ship Engineer professional qualification.
Certificate of Competency (CoC): Officer in Charge of an Engine Watch.
Full-time study duration 4 year (8 semesters), 240 ECTS.
Include two onshore and two seagoing internships, total duration 12 months.
6 special seafarers trainings based on the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
Practical trainings with Engine Room Simulator and in Engine Room Laboratory with real engine.
Graduation is finalized with the defence of Final thesis and Final qualification examination.
A Certificate of Competency is issued upon fulfilment of all internship requirements.
You will learn how:
- apply knowledge of marine engineering, technology, natural and other sciences;
- safely operate or repair power plants, auxiliary mechanisms, refrigeration units of ships of unlimited power;
- lead the ship’s engine room or repair team, operating in accordance with the IMO Conventions, the requirements of safe shipping, ship and equipment classification societies, and quality standards.
Duration of professional internship is 12 months, of which: 4-months onshore internship and 8-months seagoing internship:
Onshore internship:
– Material Processing and Repair Works Workshop at LMA workshop (1st year);
– Professional Practice of Ships Propulsion Machinery and Repair (during 2nd course).
The place of onshore internship: shipbuilding and repair yards
Seagoing internship:
– Professional practice on seagoing ships (after the 2nd year);
– Final Professional Sea-going practice (after the 3rd year).
The place of seagoing internship:
– Seagoing vessels of 750 kW or more.
Career opportunities
After obtaining the Certificate of Competency, a graduate can hold the position of the third mechanic of the ship’s engine room while working on seagoing ships; after accumulating the seagoing services determined by the Ministry of Communication of the Republic of Lithuania, seafarer can take the position of the second mechanic of the ship, and then the position of the chief mechanic on ships with unlimited engine power of various purposes.
After completing the professional career of a seafarer, it is possible to work in shipbuilding and repair companies, as well as in the Maritime Department of the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration, the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, the industry of inland water transport, etc. During the course of studies, students are given the opportunity to acquire the qualification of boat motorist.
